Personal Information Violation, WhatsApp Penalized IDR 3.7 Trillion in Ireland

Ireland's data privacy watchdog has fined WhatsApp a total of 225 million euros for violations related to sharing personal information with another company also owned by Facebook.

The fine was imposed by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) on WhatsApp on Thursday, September 2, 2021. This fine is the largest on record in Ireland.

Ireland's DPC said it had been investigating since December 2018 whether WhatsApp had complied with its "transparency obligations" under the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

"Including information provided to data subjects about the processing of information between WhatsApp and other Facebook companies," Ireland's DPC said, quoted from RT.com.

In addition to the hefty fine, the Russian regulator also issued a warning to WhatsApp, in addition to an order for proper data processing.

WhatsApp said it was against the financial law and condemned the fine as "completely disproportionate" and would appeal.

Irish regulators initially considered issuing a much lower fine of up to 50 million euros, but other watchdogs in the European Union have complained that the amount is too low.

The penalty against WhatsApp is the second largest GDPR fine to date. Previously, Amazon was also sanctioned by 746 million euros by authorities in Luxembourg.

Under European GDPR regulations, companies can be fined up to 20 million Euros or 4 percent of the company's total annual global turnover.***
